Arthur Self died from unknown causes on 6th January, 1917, while serving with 1st Essex Garrison Battalion in Egypt where they had arrived in the beginning of 1916 from Gallipoli. Garrison battalions were made up of soldiers unfit for front line duty either due to age, illness or having previously been wounded. |
